Where it came from
Hanweir Garrison was released in 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents the besieged town of Hanweir, a location central to the set's narrative which focuses on the eldritch transformation of the plane of Innistrad. Designed as a creature that can meld with another card, Hanweir, the Writhing Township, it captures the themes of body horror and transformation prevalent in the set's H.P. Lovecraft-inspired aesthetic.
The artwork for this specific promotional version was crafted by Johannes Voss, who sought to emphasize the frenetic, merging nature of the town's citizens under the influence of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul. The promo features a unique gold expansion symbol and stamp, distinguishing it from the standard card stock. It was distributed through professional tournament play and promotional events, where it was well-received by players for its aggressive mechanical utility and striking, illustrative portrayal of the set's dark atmosphere.
