Sanctifier of Souls

Sanctifier of Souls was released as a promotional card for the Eldritch Moon set in 2016, a period in Magic: The Gathering history defined by the horror-themed return to the plane of Innistrad. As a card, it was distributed through Wizards of the Coast's various organized play initiatives, intended to reward players for their participation in regional events. These promotional versions are mechanically identical to the base set card but feature unique gold-stamped date stamps or alternate art styles that distinguish them from standard booster pack pulls, making them a staple for completionist collectors.

The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a prominent artist whose work during this era often leaned into the atmospheric, gothic aesthetic central to the Innistrad block. Voss designed the Sanctifier to evoke the themes of ancestral protection and divine intervention, utilizing a palette that emphasizes the ethereal light of the character against the gloom of the setting. The artwork was well-received for its evocative lighting and its clear visual communication of the card's ability to manipulate the graveyard, which was a core mechanical pillar of the Eldritch Moon expansion.
