What it does
If one or more +1/+1 counters would be put on a creature you control, that many plus one +1/+1 counters are put on it instead.
As the fusillade of lasgun fire bounced harmlessly off the carnifex's carapace, the creature roared and advanced.

Where it came from
Hardened Scales originated in the Khans of Tarkir set for Magic: The Gathering, where it was introduced as a staple enchantment for decks revolving around +1/+1 counters. The card gained significant popularity among players for its efficient, low-cost ability to amplify growth strategies, making it a recurring presence in various formats. Its inclusion in the 2022 Warhammer 40,000 Commander deck series represents a thematic crossover, repurposing the card with new art to fit the aesthetic of the Tyranid Swarm, a faction characterized by rapid biological adaptation.
The art for this specific printing was created by David Gaillet, who was commissioned to reimagine the card through the lens of the Tyranid biomechanical aesthetic. The design emphasizes the creature's defensive carapace and alien anatomy, effectively translating the mechanical concept of hardening scales into the visual language of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The card was well-received by fans of both properties, serving as a functional reprint that maintains the card's original mechanical identity while offering a distinct, thematic visual update.
