Where it came from
Hardened Scales first appeared in the 2014 Khans of Tarkir set, designed as an enchantment to synergize with the +1/+1 counter themes prevalent in the Abzan houses. Its mechanical utility—effectively doubling the impact of any creature growth—quickly made it a staple in various green-based strategies, appearing in formats ranging from Standard to Modern. The card represents a classic example of low-cost utility enchantments that gain power over time as more efficient counter-generating cards are released.
The version from Commander Anthology Volume II, released in 2018, features the original illustration by Dan Scott. The art depicts a stylized, armored creature, emphasizing the theme of resilience and layered growth. This specific printing was included in the anthology's 'Thamond' deck, designed to provide established players with sought-after reprints in a consolidated, themed package. It is well-regarded for its functional design, which remains a benchmark for cost-effective synergy in Magic: The Gathering.
