Where it came from
Harness by Force was released in 2014 as part of the Journey into Nyx set, the final installment of the Theros block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a rare red sorcery, centered on the set's central theme of Greek mythology and the influence of the gods on the mortal realm. Mechanically, it represents the 'strive' keyword, allowing players to pay extra mana to target multiple creatures, reflecting the chaos and overwhelming power inherent in divine intervention.
The artwork was illustrated by Chase Stone, who worked to capture the visceral intensity of the spell as described in the set's narrative context. The design focuses on a mortal being overcome by the influence of a deity, visually translating the mechanics of seizing control of an opponent's creatures. It was received by players as a flexible utility card, valued in limited play environments for its ability to turn an opponent's own forces against them during a pivotal combat phase.
