Harm's Way

Harm's Way was released in the Magic 2010 core set, which debuted in July 2009. This set was a significant turning point for the game, as it introduced the first new card frame design since 2003 and marked the beginning of a shift toward more narrative-driven flavor text and legendary status for core set cards. The card itself functions as a reactive combat trick, allowing players to redirect damage dealt to a permanent or player to another target, reflecting the strategic philosophy of red and white mana combinations in that era.

The card’s artwork was rendered by Dan Murayama Scott, who was a frequent contributor to the Magic: The Gathering stable during that period. Scott aimed to visualize the redirection of kinetic energy, utilizing a dynamic pose to capture the split-second nature of an instant spell. Upon its release, the card was received as a versatile utility piece for Limited formats, noted for its ability to punish opponents who over-committed to a single attacker or damage source.
