Where it came from
Hazel of the Rootbloom was released in 2024 as part of the Bloomburrow Commander set, a collection themed around a whimsical, anthropomorphic woodland setting. The card was designed to anchor the Squirreled Away deck, leaning into the set's mechanical focus on token generation and the interaction between squirrels and food artifacts. Its inclusion reflects the Magic: The Gathering development team's commitment to expanding the squirrel tribal archetype, which has seen increasing support in recent years.
The card features artwork by illustrator Ovidio Cartagena, who was tasked with capturing the essence of the character as a mystical, nature-attuned guardian of the forest. The design prioritizes a high level of detail consistent with the Bloomburrow aesthetic, balancing the cute, storybook nature of the setting with the tactical complexity expected of a legendary creature commander.
