Provenance

Where it came from

Hedron Crawler was released in early 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Zendikar, the expansion focused on the desperate struggle of the inhabitants against the reality-warping Eldrazi titans. As a colorless artifact creature, the card represents the remnants of the ancient, floating stone structures known as hedrons, which were originally created to imprison the Eldrazi and later repurposed by scavengers and desperate survivors to harness mana.

The card was illustrated by Daniel Ljunggren, who captured the utilitarian and strange nature of the Zendikar landscape. The design focuses on the creature's simple, construct-like appearance, which mirrors the geometry of the massive stone monoliths scattered across the plane. Within the context of the game's mechanics, it was designed as a low-cost utility creature, intended to help players accelerate their mana production during the high-stakes conflict depicted in the set.
