Where it came from
Hedron-Field Purists was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set marked the conclusion of the Zendikar block, a high-fantasy world defined by its shifting, adventure-seeking environment that was suddenly besieged by the Eldrazi, an ancient race of world-consuming entities. This card depicts the mechanical resistance mounted by the plane's inhabitants, who utilized mystical stone monoliths known as hedrons to create defensive barriers against the encroaching devastation.
The card was illustrated by Mike Dringenberg, a celebrated artist known for his distinctive, stylized linework and his foundational contributions to the Sandman comic book series. His design for this piece focuses on the stark, geometric precision of the hedrons contrasted against the chaotic, alien atmosphere of the Eldrazi invasion. Upon release, the card was received as a niche defensive tool, valued by players for its ability to mitigate damage, reflecting the set's broader theme of desperate survival against overwhelming odds.
