Where it came from
Heidar, Rimewind Master was released in 2006 as part of the Coldsnap expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was uniquely designed as a thematic successor to the 1995 Ice Age block, intended to complete a cycle of top-down design inspired by arctic survival and glacial themes. Wizards of the Coast developed the set to evoke a nostalgic, retro aesthetic while introducing new mechanical interactions centered on snow-covered lands.
The card was illustrated by Justin Sweet, who was tasked with visualizing a legendary figure capable of manipulating the harsh, frozen environment. Sweet’s portrayal emphasizes the character's icy, ethereal nature through a cool color palette and sweeping, fluid linework. Upon its debut, the card was recognized primarily as a utility piece in limited play environments, valued for its ability to repeatedly bounce permanent cards back to an opponent's hand.
