Lore

Why it matters

The Heirloom Blade is a specialized equipment card that rewards players for building decks around specific creature types, as its ability triggers whenever an equipped creature leaves the battlefield. Because it automatically attaches itself to a new creature of the same type, it creates a persistent advantage that helps maintain board presence throughout a game.

Card face

What it does

Equipped creature gets +3/+1.

Whenever equipped creature dies, you may reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a creature card that shares a creature type with it. Put that card into your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

Provenance

Where it came from

Heirloom Blade was originally introduced as a Magic: The Gathering card in the 2017 Commander set before being reprinted in Jumpstart 2022 as card number 775. The card functions as an equipment that provides a power and toughness boost to a creature, while also allowing a player to draw cards when that creature leaves the battlefield, mechanically reinforcing the theme of a legacy being passed from one warrior to the next.

The artwork for the Jumpstart 2022 edition continues the visual tradition established in its original release, focusing on the thematic weight of a legendary weapon. The design is intended to evoke a sense of storied history and fantasy craftsmanship, fitting within the game's broader aesthetic of high-fantasy artifacts that influence the board state through their narrative weight.
