Where it came from
Heirloom Mirror // Inherited Fiend is a double-faced card released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. The set draws heavy inspiration from Gothic horror and classic werewolf folklore, centering on the plane of Innistrad during an eternal night. The card was designed to capture the narrative of a cursed family lineage, where the mirror serves as a catalyst for a transformation from a seemingly benign portrait into a monstrous entity.
The art for this card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a distinct visual language to bridge the gap between the mundane domestic setting and the grotesque horror of the transformation. By utilizing the double-faced mechanic, the design mechanically reinforces the concept of a hidden, darker nature revealed. Upon its release, it was well-received by players interested in the set's graveyard-centric synergies and its contribution to the atmospheric, spooky flavor that defines the Innistrad block.
