Where it came from
Malevolent Hermit // Benevolent Geist was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set returned to the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, focusing on the encroaching darkness and the struggle to restore the balance of the seasons. The card showcases the set's signature double-faced mechanic, which allows players to flip the card to represent a transformation, reflecting the thematic emphasis on metamorphosis and the duality of the creatures residing in this haunted world.
The art was created by illustrator Zezhou Chen, who aimed to capture the unsettling nature of the Hermit and the ethereal, protective aura of the Geist. The design follows the classic tropes of gothic folklore, depicting a recluse who harbors supernatural power. Within the competitive community, the card is widely recognized for its utility in controlling the pace of the game, particularly in formats that reward the ability to neutralize non-creature spells, cementing its reputation as a staple for players favoring interactive, reactive strategies.
