Where it came from
Hellkite Igniter was included in the Mishra’s Burnished Banner deck, released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War Commander set. This set was designed to complement the main expansion, which revisited the iconic conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra, a pivotal era in the lore of Magic: The Gathering. The card serves as a representative of the artifact-heavy synergy prevalent in Grixis-colored mechanical decks, drawing on the thematic focus of the set regarding ancient, war-torn technology.
The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who rendered the dragon as a mechanical behemoth infused with molten energy. The design intent was to capture the destructive nature of Mishra’s artifice, emphasizing the relationship between fire-breathing dragons and the metallic, industrial aesthetic that defined the Brothers' War era. It was received as a functional, aggressive finisher for artifact-focused strategies, praised for its ability to scale in power based on the number of artifacts the player controls.
