Where it came from
Hermes, Overseer of Elpis, was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair x Final Fantasy Commander set. This collaborative series was designed to bridge the tactical gameplay of Magic with the iconic aesthetics and narrative elements of the Final Fantasy franchise. The card features Hermes, a pivotal character from Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, capturing his role as the chief overseer of Elpis and his complex ideological conflict regarding the fate of the star.
The card's illustration reflects the ethereal, academic atmosphere of Elpis, utilizing a color palette and artistic style intended to evoke the philosophical weight of the character's journey. Developed through a collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Square Enix, the design process focused on balancing functional mechanics for a Commander deck with authentic character representation. Upon its release, the card was well-received by fans of both the trading card game and the video game series for its thematic integration and detailed artwork.
