Hermetic Study

Hermetic Study was released in 1998 as part of the Urza's Saga expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set is notable for its narrative focus on the artificer Urza and for introducing the enchantment type, which was refined during this era to provide more permanent board states. This card emerged during a period where Wizards of the Coast was exploring mechanics that turned non-creature permanents into engines for direct damage, effectively granting a creature-like ability to a sorcerer or mage depicted on the card.

The artwork was provided by Ron Spencer, a prolific illustrator whose work defined much of the aesthetic of late 90s Magic cards. Spencer’s style, characterized by high-contrast ink work and a gritty, sometimes unsettling interpretation of fantasy figures, was chosen to evoke the isolation of a scholar buried in esoteric research.
