Where it came from
The Hermit Druid was originally released in the 1998 Urza's Legacy expansion, but this specific version was commissioned as a promotional card for the 2004 Judge Gift program. These cards were distributed exclusively to certified Magic: The Gathering judges as a gesture of appreciation for their volunteer work at tournaments and their role in maintaining the integrity of the game's rules.
The artwork for this printing was provided by artist Dan Dos Santos, who moved away from the character's original aesthetic to provide a more refined, painterly depiction. His design emphasizes the druid's connection to the natural world, favoring a textured, atmospheric approach that was well-received by collectors for its departure from the standard card art of the era.
