Where it came from
The Balance card was released as part of the 2004 Judge Gift Cards set, a series of promotional items distributed exclusively to certified judges of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. These cards served as tokens of appreciation for the volunteers who facilitated organized play events, rewarding their commitment to the game's community and the maintenance of competitive integrity.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators in the history of Magic: The Gathering, known for his work on the game's original foundational cards. For this release, the artwork was updated from the original Alpha version to reflect a modern aesthetic while retaining the high-contrast, dramatic style that defined Rush's contributions to the game's visual identity.
