Where it came from
Hero's Blade was originally printed in the Khans of Tarkir set in 2014, designed to evoke the high-fantasy trope of an ancient weapon that grants greatness to any warrior who wields it. It fits into the broader Magic: The Gathering mechanics surrounding Equipment, offering a low cost to cast and an automatic attachment ability when a legendary creature enters the battlefield. This functionality made it a popular utility card for Commander and casual play formats, focusing on resource efficiency and synergy with legendary themes.
The Jumpstart 2022 version, numbered 776, features the same tactical design as the original but places the card within the curated, randomized experience of the Jumpstart product line. This release was intended to provide players with accessible, plug-and-play decks that showcase diverse art styles and mechanics across the game's history. The illustration for the card, handled by various artists throughout its different printings, emphasizes the weathered, storied appearance of a blade that has seen many hands, reflecting its role as a persistent, reusable asset on the battlefield.
