Provenance

Where it came from

Hero's Blade was released in 2014 as part of the Commander 2014 set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, this equipment card was introduced to support the game's social multiplayer format, specifically incentivizing players to field powerful legendary creatures. Its mechanical design reflects the theme of legendary heroes growing in strength as they lead their forces into battle.

The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who has contributed extensively to the visual language of the game. Voss utilized a dynamic, heroic aesthetic to capture the essence of a weapon worthy of a commander, focusing on lighting and composition to emphasize the card's stature within the set. It remains a staple inclusion for decks centered around legendary creature synergies.
