Where it came from
Hex was released in 2011 as part of the inaugural Commander product line for Magic: The Gathering. Designed to support the burgeoning multiplayer Commander format, this card was specifically included in the 'Devour for Power' deck. The design objective was to provide black-aligned decks with a powerful, high-impact board wipe that rewarded players for managing the game state, reflecting the political and social nature of the multi-player format.
The card features illustration by artist Nils Hamm, whose atmospheric and gothic style was sought after for this set to emphasize the dark, necrotic themes of the deck. Upon its release, Hex was well received by players for its flavor and specific utility in Commander, establishing itself as a quintessential piece of the format's early history and a staple example of the specialized design philosophy behind the Commander 2011 preconstructed decks.
