Where it came from
The Hex card, numbered 17, is part of the 1990 Marvel Universe Series 1 trading card set produced by Impel. This collection marked a significant moment in the hobby, as it was the first comprehensive set to feature the breadth of the Marvel Comics pantheon on high-quality, glossy card stock. It was designed to appeal to both comic book readers and burgeoning collectors during a period when the comic industry was experiencing a major retail surge.
The design of the card relies on the quintessential Marvel house style of the late eighties and early nineties, characterized by dramatic posing and bold, primary-color layouts. By featuring characters like Hex—an obscure mystical entity within the Marvel mythos—the set aimed to provide a complete encyclopedia of the Marvel Universe. The cards were received with immense enthusiasm at the time, helping to solidify trading cards as a legitimate extension of the comic collecting experience.
