Where it came from
The Hezrou card was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set, a collaborative expansion between Wizards of the Coast and the Dungeons & Dragons franchise. The set was designed to bring the deep lore of the Forgotten Realms into the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, with this specific card representing a classic high-level fiend from the D&D bestiary known for its corrosive, foul-smelling aura.
The artwork was illustrated by Lucas Staniec, who aimed to capture the grotesque, toad-like physiology of the demon while emphasizing its mechanical ability to deal passive damage to opponents' creatures. Upon its release, the card became a staple in black-aligned Commander decks, particularly those focused on sacrifice synergies and damage-over-time effects, where its presence on the battlefield serves as an efficient deterrent against aggressive board states.
