Provenance

Where it came from

Hibernation was included in the sideboard of the 2002 World Championship deck piloted by Simen Hanstveit. This series of decks was released by Wizards of the Coast to allow players to experience the same card lists used by top competitors during the Magic: The Gathering World Championships. The cards in these sets are distinguished by gold-bordered backs and the player's signature on the front, making them ineligible for standard tournament play but highly valued as historical documents of competitive metas.

Originally debuting in the Urza's Saga set, Hibernation was designed as a specialized green sorcery capable of returning all green permanents to their owners' hands. Its inclusion in Hanstveit's sideboard reflected the strategic necessity of managing board states against aggressive green-based strategies prevalent during the 2002 tournament circuit. The card's design remains a quintessential example of Magic's 'color pie' philosophy, where specific colors are granted reactive tools to disrupt opponents' established resources.
