Hill Giant

Hill Giant originated in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a quintessential mid-tier creature. By the time it was reprinted as card number 197 in the 2005 Ninth Edition core set, it had become a foundational piece of the game's early identity, representing the standard 'vanilla' creature with no special abilities. Its inclusion in core sets was meant to serve as a baseline for power and toughness, helping new players grasp the fundamental mechanics of combat during their introductory games.

The Ninth Edition illustration was produced by Greg Staples, who moved away from the more whimsical or crude artistic interpretations of the giant seen in earlier printings. Staples provided a more detailed, gritty aesthetic that aligned with the modern creative direction of the Wizards of the Coast art department during the mid-2000s.
