What it does
Spirits you control get +1/+1 and have trample and haste.
Whenever another nontoken creature you control dies, exile it. If you do, create a token that's a copy of that creature, except it's a Spirit in addition to its other types and it has "When this token leaves the battlefield, return the exiled card to its owner's graveyard."

Where it came from
Hofri Ghostforge was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Representing the Lorehold College—the institution dedicated to history and archaeology—the card was designed to mechanically embody the college's focus on interacting with the graveyard to manifest spirits of the past. The card was conceptualized during the development of the Strixhaven set to provide a unique leader for players interested in the intersection of combat and necromancy.
The illustration was crafted by artist Jason A. Engle, who leaned into the aesthetic of Lorehold by depicting Hofri as an ethereal, ghostly figure amidst ancient stone architecture. The artwork aims to capture the scholarly yet spectral nature of the college's magical practice. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players of the Commander format, who praised its ability to turn fallen creatures into empowered spirit tokens, cementing its role as a thematic centerpiece for graveyard-centric strategies.
