Holy Armor

Holy Armor was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the inaugural set of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game published by Wizards of the Coast. Designed by Richard Garfield, the set aimed to introduce a complex, strategy-driven fantasy game that functioned as a portable version of role-playing tabletop experiences. The artwork for this card was provided by Quinton Hoover, a foundational illustrator for the game whose romantic, emotive style became synonymous with early Magic aesthetic, specifically capturing the ethereal and protective qualities of the enchanted gear.

The card belongs to the common rarity tier of the Alpha set, reflecting the game's initial distribution model where starter decks and boosters were sold to establish a player base. Upon release, the set was an unexpected success, quickly selling out and creating a cultural phenomenon that pioneered the collectible card game genre. While Holy Armor itself is a straightforward enchantment, its presence in the Alpha set marks a significant historical moment in gaming history, representing the genesis of a franchise that has remained influential for over three decades.
