Where it came from
Host of the Hereafter was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Tarkir: Dragonstorm, a set that revisits the plane of Tarkir with a focus on the interplay between its warring factions and draconic history. The card was designed to function within the set's mechanical environment, emphasizing the lingering impact of creatures even after they have left the battlefield, aligning with the thematic focus on ancestral spirits and the cyclical nature of time on the plane.
The artwork for this card was commissioned to evoke the ethereal, haunting aesthetic characteristic of the Sultai Brood or similar factions focused on necromancy and the afterlife. Artists tasked with these illustrations are generally guided by Wizards of the Coast's style guides to maintain visual continuity within the plane, aiming to balance the grim subject matter with the high-fantasy visual identity that players associate with the broader Tarkir narrative.
