Provenance

Where it came from

Hot Springs was released in 1995 as part of the Ice Age expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the third expansion set for the game, Ice Age was designed to be a standalone experience with a thematic focus on snowy landscapes and cold-weather survival, introducing the snow-covered land card type. The set was developed during a period of rapid growth for Wizards of the Coast, intended to provide players with a fresh mechanical landscape after the initial sets.

The card illustration was created by artist Anson Maddocks, a prominent contributor to the early aesthetic of the game. Maddocks utilized a distinct, moody style that characterized much of the artwork in the mid-nineties, aiming to evoke the harsh, desolate beauty of the set's namesake climate. Upon release, the card was received as a situational utility piece, valued more for its thematic role within the snow-covered framework of the expansion than for high-level competitive play.
