Provenance

Where it came from

Regeneration was originally released in the 1995 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Ice Age. This set marked a significant shift for the game, as it was the first to be sold in fixed-card starter decks and randomized booster packs, establishing the modern distribution model for the franchise. The card was designed to provide a foundational defensive mechanic, allowing a creature to survive lethal damage at the cost of mana, a concept that had existed since the game's inception in Limited Edition Alpha.

The artwork for this particular printing was created by artist Anson Maddocks. Known for his distinctive, often dark and organic style during the early years of Magic, Maddocks intended for the illustration to capture the primal, visceral nature of self-healing within a harsh, frozen landscape. The card was received as a functional staple for green-aligned decks of the era, fitting neatly into the set's broader theme of survival and resilience in an unforgiving climate.
