Provenance

Where it came from

Hovermyr was released in 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia set for Magic: The Gathering, representing the final stage of the Phyrexians' conquest of the plane of Mirrodin. In the game's lore, the card depicts a small, insectoid construct repurposed to serve the Phyrexian machine orthodoxy. Its design reflects the set's aesthetic of biomechanical horror, combining metallic plating with organic, fleshy textures characteristic of the New Phyrexian aesthetic.

The artwork for Hovermyr was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta. The piece is intended to convey the unsettling, utilitarian nature of the Phyrexian-inflected constructs, emphasizing functionality over aesthetic appeal. Upon its release, the card functioned as a low-cost mana accelerator, finding a niche in limited formats and artifact-focused decks due to its ability to provide flexible mana while remaining an artifact itself.
