Impaler Shrike

The Impaler Shrike was released as part of the New Phyrexia expansion for Magic: The Gathering in May 2011. As a common creature, the Shrike was designed to facilitate gameplay within the set's specific mechanics, particularly showcasing the Phyrexian mana system that allowed players to pay life rather than colored mana to cast spells, representing the invasive and parasitic nature of the faction.

The illustration was crafted by artist Nils Hamm, whose work is characterized by a distinctive, ethereal, and often haunting painterly style.
