Howl from Beyond

Howl from Beyond was released as part of the Fifth Edition of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 1997. As a core set, Fifth Edition was designed to provide a comprehensive and accessible entry point into the game, featuring a mix of cards from previous expansions like Legends and The Dark. This specific card, which allows players to temporarily boost the power of a creature, was originally introduced in the Fallen Empires expansion to capture the high-risk, high-reward nature of black-aligned mana.

The artwork for this iteration was rendered by artist Daniel Gelon, a prolific contributor during the early years of the game. His illustration focuses on the macabre and unsettling aesthetic typical of the set's darker cards, utilizing visceral imagery to reflect the card's function of drawing power from the grave. While Fifth Edition cards are generally considered common play pieces, they remain significant to collectors for their role in stabilizing the card pool during the game's formative years.
