Where it came from
The Howling Giant was introduced as part of the Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2020, released in July 2019. As a core set release, the card was designed to be accessible for newer players while providing staple effects for the game's rotating Standard format, fitting into the long-standing tradition of green creature-focused mechanics that emphasize high power and battlefield presence.
The card features artwork by illustrator Mathias Kollros, who has contributed numerous pieces to the game's expansive visual catalog. Kollros was tasked with capturing the aggressive nature of a giant, emphasizing the creature's immense scale and primal energy to match its mechanical ability to grow stronger based on the cards in a player's hand, a design choice intended to reward players for managing their resources carefully throughout the game.
