Where it came from
Vilis, Broker of Blood was released in 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2020. It was designed as a high-cost black legendary creature, embodying the archetype of a powerful demon that trades life force for card advantage. The design philosophy behind Vilis focuses on the mechanical synergy between paying life to draw cards and the creature's ability to weaken opponents, reflecting the ruthless nature of black-aligned characters in the game's lore.
The card was illustrated by Chase Stone, an artist known for his dramatic and visceral depictions of fantasy figures. Stone opted for a composition that emphasizes the demon's imposing stature and fluid, blood-themed aesthetic. Upon its release, the card gained significant traction within the Commander format, where players valued its ability to act as a powerful engine for decks capable of managing life totals while generating massive card velocity.
