Huang Zhong, Shu General

Released in 1999 as part of the Portal Three Kingdoms set, Huang Zhong, Shu General was designed specifically to introduce the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering to the Asian market by adapting the historical and literary figures of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The set was modeled after the strategic warfare of the 14th-century Chinese historical novel, aiming to provide a simplified yet thematic entry point for new players who were already familiar with the lore of the Shu, Wei, and Wu dynasties.

The card features artwork by Jian Guo Mi, who illustrated many of the set’s legendary figures. In keeping with the high-stakes narrative of the source material, the design team focused on emphasizing tactical keywords like 'horsemanship' to represent the cavalry maneuvers central to the battles depicted in the novel. While the set was initially limited in its release, it became a point of significant interest for collectors due to its unique cultural fusion and the relative scarcity of its print run compared to standard core sets.
