Where it came from
Imperial Edict was released in 1999 as part of the Portal Three Kingdoms set, a specialized expansion for the Magic: The Gathering card game. The set was designed to introduce the game to new players in the Asian market, particularly in Japan and parts of East Asia, by adapting the historical and literary themes of the 14th-century Chinese epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
The card’s illustration and mechanical design were crafted to reflect the high-stakes political atmosphere of the era, focusing on themes of governance and military command. While the set initially saw a limited release outside of its target regions, it later gained significant status among veteran players for its unique mechanics and the inclusion of powerful, localized cards that remain distinct within the broader history of the game.
