Hulking Bugbear

Hulking Bugbear was released in July 2021 as part of the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked the first full crossover between the collectible card game and the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing system, designed to integrate iconic monsters, items, and settings into the established rules of Magic. The card was crafted to capture the essence of a bugbear’s physical strength and tendency to ambush adventurers, utilizing the pack tactics mechanic to incentivize aggressive play.

The card’s illustration was provided by artist Andrey Kuzinskiy, who sought to capture the intimidating, feral nature of the creature while remaining true to the classic Forgotten Realms aesthetic. The design prioritizes a high-power, low-toughness profile, a common convention for creatures intended to overwhelm opponents quickly. Upon release, it was well-received by limited format players for its utility in red-aligned decks and its success in faithfully translating a quintessential D&D threat onto a standard-sized card.
