Where it came from
The Hurloon Minotaur oversized promo was released in the mid-1990s as a promotional tool for the burgeoning Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It reflects the era's strategy of using distinct, large-format versions of iconic early cards to draw attention to the game at gaming conventions, local hobby shops, and promotional events. These oversized cards were designed to function primarily as display pieces rather than playable game components, serving as visual marketing collateral that highlighted the game's fantasy aesthetic.
The illustration is the work of Anson Maddocks, one of the original artists hired by Wizards of the Coast for the game's 1993 debut. His depiction of the Hurloon Minotaur became a quintessential image of the game's early identity, characterized by a gritty, hand-painted fantasy style that defined the Alpha and Beta sets. While the original card was a common creature, the oversized promo elevated the artwork's visibility, cementing the Minotaur as a recognizable mascot for the brand during its initial period of rapid growth.
