Where it came from
The Hydra token, numbered 20 in the Modern Horizons 3 Commander set, was produced by Wizards of the Coast for use alongside the 'Tricky Terrain' preconstructed deck. This set was designed to integrate powerful, modern-inflected mechanics with the nostalgic, high-complexity themes characteristic of the Modern Horizons series. Tokens serve as essential functional components for players utilizing cards that generate creatures as auxiliary game pieces.
The artistic direction for tokens in the Modern Horizons 3 expansion emphasizes a distinct visual identity that reflects the overarching aesthetic of the set. While token illustrations are often collaborative efforts within the studio to ensure cohesion, these designs are curated to evoke the sprawling, monstrous nature of hydras within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. They were received as standard, utilitarian components that maintain the set's high production quality.
