Where it came from
I Delight in Your Convulsions was released in 2010 as part of the Archenemy expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set introduced a unique format where one player acts as the villain against a team, utilizing a deck of oversized Scheme cards to trigger powerful, often chaotic, global effects. The card was designed to embody the flavor of an oppressive, sadistic antagonist, reinforcing the theme of the Archenemy manipulating the board state to ensure the suffering of their opponents.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Dave Kendall, whose distinctively dark and gothic style was frequently employed by Wizards of the Coast during this era to define the aesthetic of various sets. Kendall’s composition emphasizes a sense of agonizing transformation and magical corruption, effectively communicating the card’s mechanical intent to disrupt and destabilize the opposing players' resources and morale.
