Where it came from
Look Skyward and Despair was released in 2010 as part of the Archenemy expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced a unique gameplay mode where a single player, acting as the archenemy, utilized a deck of oversized Scheme cards to challenge a team of opponents. This card reflects the set's thematic emphasis on grand, villainous power, designed to provide a mechanical advantage that mimics a narrative turning point in a high-fantasy encounter.
The artwork for this card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a veteran illustrator known for his contributions to the game's iconic visual identity. Briclot utilized a dramatic, low-angle perspective to emphasize the overwhelming scale and terrifying nature of the creature depicted, aligning with the card's function of resetting the board state to favor the archenemy. Upon its release, players praised the scheme format for its ability to simulate the feeling of fighting a raid boss in a traditional trading card game environment.
