Ib Halfheart, Goblin Tactician

Ib Halfheart, Goblin Tactician was originally introduced in the 2007 Magic: The Gathering set Lorwyn, designed to capture the chaotic and sacrificial nature of goblin warfare. The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, who utilized a gritty, dynamic aesthetic to depict the character as a wizened, tactical leader amidst a swarm of frantic minions, contrasting the typical mindless depiction of goblins with a sense of seasoned, albeit self-destructive, command.

The version from the Duel Decks Anthology: Elves vs. Goblins, released in 2014, features the same card design within a preconstructed format meant to highlight the long-standing rivalry between these two classic fantasy creature types. As part of a reprint series, this iteration brought a beloved casual-play engine back into circulation for a new generation of players, maintaining its reputation for creating high-variance, memorable board states where players trade their own forces for explosive tactical advantages.
