Where it came from
Icon of Ancestry was first introduced as an artifact card in the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in July 2019. It was designed to support tribal synergy decks, allowing players to name a creature type and provide a stat bonus along with a card-drawing utility. The card reflects the set's focus on foundational mechanics that provide broad utility across various play formats, particularly Commander.
The promotional version, designated 229s, was distributed as a participation reward or prize for events surrounding the set's launch. The illustration, created by artist Igor Kieryluk, leans into the high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the game, depicting a relic imbued with ancient, glowing energy. Within the community, the card is recognized for its functional utility in casual play, bridging the gap between historical set aesthetics and mechanical relevance.
