Where it came from
Agent of Treachery was originally released in the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, hitting the market in July 2019. Designed as a high-mana cost rare, it was crafted to facilitate strategic board control by allowing players to steal any permanent from an opponent, a powerful effect that quickly became a defining mechanic for Blue-aligned decks in the Standard format of that era.
The promotional version, designated as collector number 43p, features unique alternative art by Magali Villeneuve. Known for her ethereal and detailed fantasy illustrations, Villeneuve leaned into the character’s deceptive nature, depicting a mysterious figure emerging from shadow. This variant was distributed through Wizards of the Coast's various organized play initiatives, becoming a sought-after piece for players who valued the card's competitive utility alongside its distinct, artist-driven aesthetic.
