Ignoble Hierarch

Ignoble Hierarch was originally introduced as a core component of the Modern Horizons 2 set in 2021, designed by Wizards of the Coast to bring high-powered, format-specific cards to the Modern ecosystem. It functions as a functional color-shifted homage to the iconic Noble Hierarch, trading the original's Bant color identity for a Jund-aligned alignment that emphasizes red, green, and black mana acceleration. The card was specifically crafted to support aggressive, creature-heavy strategies, providing players with the ability to ramp mana while enabling the 'exalted' keyword, which rewards the player for attacking with a single creature.

The card’s artwork was illustrated by Johan Grenier, who leaned into the dark, visceral aesthetic associated with the Jund shard of the Alara plane. By depicting a rugged, shamanistic figure, Grenier sought to visually differentiate the card from its predecessor’s more polished, noble appearance. Upon release, the card was widely received by competitive players as a staple inclusion for decks relying on creature-based mana support, and its inclusion in 'The List'—a rotating selection of cards inserted into set boosters—ensured its continued availability and visibility for collectors and players alike.
