Provenance

Where it came from

Ignoble Hierarch was introduced as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in 2021. Designed as a functional black-aligned counterpart to the iconic Noble Hierarch, the card was created to provide Jund-colored decks with the same mana acceleration and utility that green-white-blue strategies have enjoyed for years. Its release was highly anticipated by competitive players who viewed it as a necessary bridge for midrange archetypes within the Modern format.

The art for this promo version was illustrated by Titus Lunter, who adopted a darker, more visceral aesthetic to suit the card's alignment. Lunter focused on depicting the Hierarch as an unsettling figure of devotion, moving away from the noble light of the original card to embrace a jagged, sinister quality. The piece was well-received by the community for its thematic cohesion and its distinct visual departure from its predecessor.
