Provenance

Where it came from

Ill-Gotten Inheritance was originally introduced in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering set Ravnica Allegiance, representing the Orzhov Syndicate's influence on the plane of Ravnica. The card features art by Winona Nelson, who depicts the heavy, soul-binding imagery characteristic of the Syndicate. Its design focuses on the drain-and-gain mechanic, mechanically reinforcing the flavor of a lingering, parasitic debt that grows more taxing for opponents over time.

The 2024 Ravnica Remastered set sought to curate the most iconic and thematic cards from the three separate visits to the city-plane. Ill-Gotten Inheritance was selected for inclusion as a common to maintain the draft environment's focus on the Orzhov's attrition-based playstyle. Nelson's original artwork was preserved for this reprint, ensuring continuity in the visual identity of the Syndicate's sinister reach across the Remastered collection.
