What it does
Each player may bid life for control of target creature. You start the bidding with a bid of 0. In turn order, each player may top the high bid. The bidding ends if the high bid stands. The high bidder loses life equal to the high bid and gains control of the creature. (This effect lasts indefinitely.)

Where it came from
Illicit Auction was first released as part of the Ice Age set in 1995 before being reprinted with the same artwork in the Sixth Edition base set. Designed during a period when Wizards of the Coast was aggressively expanding the mechanics of early Magic: The Gathering, the card represents the chaotic, high-risk flavor of the game's early years, focusing on a bidding mechanic that forces players to wager their life totals for control of a creature.
The card’s visual identity is defined by the work of artist Scott Kirschner, whose distinct, dark aesthetic helped establish the grim atmosphere of early Magic expansion sets. His illustration depicts a frantic, subterranean bidding war, which aligns with the card’s high-stakes mechanical design. While the card is often cited by players as a polarizing example of early experimental design, it remains a notable piece of the game's history for its unique interaction with life totals and its signature look from the mid-1990s.
