Where it came from
Illuminor Szeras, card number 37 in the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022 as part of a collaborative venture between Magic: The Gathering and Games Workshop. The card represents the titular Necron scientist from the Warhammer 40,000 universe, designed to translate his lore-heavy role as a collector of biological and mechanical specimens into the mechanics of the Commander format. Its design features the distinct, grimdark aesthetic of the Necron faction, utilizing the specific visual language of the source material to evoke the cold, calculating nature of the character.
The card was illustrated by David Sondered, who captured Szeras amidst his grim experiments with the characteristic glowing conduits and skeletal frame typical of Necron aesthetics. Within the set, the card was widely received for its powerful synergy with the Necron Dynasty preconstructed deck, quickly becoming a staple for players focusing on graveyard-recursion and artifact-based strategies. It remains a hallmark of the set’s success in blending the tactical gameplay of Magic with the expansive, dark sci-fi world-building established by Games Workshop.
